Nature & Nurture: Family History for Adoptees - free webinar by Janet Hovorka and Amy Slade now online for limited time

2016-11-18-image500blog
The recording of today's webinar, "Nature & Nurture: Family History for Adoptees" by Janet Hovorka and Amy Slade is now available to view at www.FamilyTreeWebinars.com for free for a limited time.
Webinar Description
Two sisters, one adopted and one not, discuss the underlying concepts of genealogy for adoptees and their families. Come learn the difference between nature and nurture genealogy. The adoptee's biological "nature" family history, enhanced by careful use of DNA testing, can fill in blanks where records can't and help adoptees better understand their biological origin. The adoptive family's history can help explain the formative "nurture" foundation of an adoptee's life and create connections with adoptive family members and the adoptive family narrative. Using best practices, family history can be a powerful tool in binding adoptive families and in helping adoptees learn about and make peace with their individual life story.

Civil Law Notaries: Using Notarial Records to Build a Family History - free BCG webinar by Melanie D. Holtz, CG now online for limited time

2016-11-15-image500blog
The recording of tonight's webinar, "Civil Law Notaries: Using Notarial Records to Build a Family History" by Melanie D. Holtz, CG and The Board for Certification of Genealogists is now available to view at www.FamilyTreeWebinars.com for free for a limited time.
Webinar Description
Notarial records are a valuable resource in those areas of the world where civil law notaries recorded all legal transactions. Property deeds [land, personal, or agricultural], mortgages, wills, dowries, late birth registrations, marriage permissions, and many other types of documents can be found within this record set. These records often provide key details about a family, their relationships, and financial transactions which cannot be found within any other type of genealogical resource.
Understanding the procedures behind the preparation of these documents is key to understanding their method of conservation, the formats the documents will be found in, and the contents therein. This lecture will provide examples of several Italian and French documents that were particularly descriptive and which provided key details on the families being researched.

About the presenter
JaneRollins-144x144Jane Neff Rollins began researching her family history when genealogy research required going to the Family History Library in person, and hand scrolling microfilm. The first time she recognized her great-grandfather's family on the 1900 census, she burst into tears. Although she specializes in researching those with Eastern European Jewish ancestry, her clients have diverse backgrounds, including those with roots in colonial America. Jane speaks, reads, and writes Russian and French, and has transliterated 19th century Russian language census, business directory, and vital records entries for online databases over the last 20 years. Jane has a substantial personal collection of late 19th and early 20th century family photographs, some of which were taken by ancestors who were professional photographers both in Russia and the United States. She studied costume design in college and worked as a costumer/assistant designer for the Portland Opera Company. Her knowledge of fashion helps her determine when and where your family photographs may have been taken. As an epidemiologist and medical writer, Jane's knowledge of health and medicine enables her to interpret the significance of DNA test results. Jane has spoken professionally about genealogy since 2012, and has since given genealogy lectures throughout the U.S. and abroad. Jane's genealogical writing has appeared in RootsKey, the newsletter of the Jewish Genealogical Society – Los Angeles. She is also the author of the upcoming book, Health Care Navigation 101: Make the Health Care System Work for You. She is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists, the Genealogical Speakers Guild, the National Genealogical Society and the Jewish Genealogical Society of Los Angeles.
