Donna Moughty, a Professional Genealogist and former Regional Manager for

Learn how to organize and share your digital images!

If you are unable to quickly locate any digital image or document, you need the techniques that Legacy Family Tree's Geoff Rasmussen (that's me!) will teach in this free webinar. You will learn how Google's Picasa and Adobe's Photoshop Elements can help you sort, tag, and quickly locate your pictures. You will also learn how to securely access your photos in the "cloud" (from any internet-connected computer) and share them with others. Finally, Geoff will give suggestions on how to organize your digitized genealogy documents (wills, census, etc.) and add them to your Legacy Family Tree file.

On a personal note, I'm converting my most-popular genealogy conference class, Digital Images for Genealogists and Technologists, into two separate webinars - this sharing/organizing webinar on February 29 and the scanning/digitizing/editing/preserving webinar on June 27. I'm excited to share these ideas with our world-wide audience for the first time!

Remember - although registration is free, space is limited to the first 1,000 people to join on the day of the event. ISGS Announces 2012 Webinar Series

Illinois State Genealogical Society is proud to announce its new webinar series for 2012. For those of you new to this form of genealogy education, webinars are lectures delivered over the internet that you can access on your computer from your home or office. On the second Tuesday of each month at 8 PM Central, we will hold a live webinar, which is free to anyone. ISGS members can access a recorded copy in the Members Section of the ISGS website at any time after the live event.

In January, we kicked off the series with Thomas MacEntee’s presentation, 10 Ways to Jumpstart You Genealogy in 2012. And on February 14, Lisa Alzo presented Cool Tools for Publishing Your Family History. Migration Patterns: An Alternative for Locating African Origins

Jim Ison will discuss how DNA testing has become the only option for many in learning about African origins. As popular as DNA is in providing clues to ancestral origins, there are limitations to what can be learned using DNA tests. Learn major migration patterns of millions of African Americans from colonial America to the deep South and on to Northern states and, how the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade database can provide insights into African origins.

Jim Ison, AG, CG, is a manager at the Family History Library. He was the first director of the FamilySearch Center at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Presenter at AAHGS, International Black History Summit, NGS and FGS. Former national Board member of the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG) and past President and Vice-President of the Utah Chapter of APG.

Voices from the Past: Using Manuscripts in African American Research

Deborah Abbott will help us understand how Manuscripts, which normally are not found online, are one of the most underutilized resources in genealogical research. These primary sources help to bring ancestors to life by adding history, feelings and personalities to the people who lived before us. Letters, diaries, photographs, oral histories, journals, and memoirs are just a few of the documents found in manuscript collections. Learn how to locate these records and become familiar with the repositories that hold them.

Deborah A. Abbott, Ph.D., is an adjunct faculty member at the Institute of Genealogy & Historical Research (IGHR) at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama and currently serves as a Trustee on the Ohio Genealogical Society (OGS) Board. She is past-president of the African-American Genealogical Society, Cleveland, Ohio (AAGS) and a retired professor of Counseling from Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland. She holds both the Bachelor of Science and Masters of Education degrees from Tuskegee University (Alabama) and the Ph.D. degree from Kent State University (Ohio).

Ol' Myrt here will host two RootsTech 2012 Review workshop webinars today to share thoughts with live and remote RootsTech 2012 participants. This means YOU! We need your input! Speaking of Archives.com, what is their single best contract partnership of late?
How do you feel about a FamilySearch employee winning the RootsTech Developers Challenge?
What's with the "ecosystem" concept at FamilySearch?
Which genealogy vendor doesn't understand a luncheon talk should be more entertaining, less technical?

Genealogy Idol winner - watch the recording

In a jam-packed room in Salt Lake City, Utah, the first-ever Genealogy Idol competition took place - and it lived up to the hype. Held at RootsTech (over 4,000 attendees), AND broadcast to a live webinar audience, finalists Elizabeth Clark, Elyse Doerflinger, Michael Hait, and Marian Pierre-Louis presented three 3-minute presentations on their favorite technology tip, their favorite website, and their favorite genealogy serendipity story. At the end the virtual attendees cast their votes live and picked the RootsTech Genealogy Idol winner - Marian Pierre-Louis! Congratulations to Marion. The results were very close - for which I couldn't have been more pleased. All four presenters educated and entertained the audience - everyone, especially the viewers left a winner.

Genealogy Idol Competition - finalists announced AND sign up to watch and vote

The first-ever Genealogy Idol competition will be held Thursday, February 2, 2012. The four finalists have now been chosen and the winner will be decided by YOU! All you have to do is register for the live event (free), watch the 1-hour competition from your computer, and vote.

In the three rounds of competition, the four contestants will demonstrate their gen-tech expertise and try to woo you with their favorite gen-tech secrets. Everyone will learn - but only one will leave with the title of "RootsTech Genealogy Idol 2012." Legacy Family Tree's Geoff Rasmussen will host the competition which will be broadcast live via the RootsTech genealogy conference in Salt Lake City, Utah on Thursday in Room 255B.

The Topics
Applicants were required to propose topics on these three categories:

Round 1: Favorite Technology Tip
Round 2: Genealogy Serendipity story
Round 3: Technology website or blog

The four finalists were chosen based on their excellent applications to participate. While I won't announce their specific topics, I'm so excited for our audience - the tips/tricks that each will demonstrate will teach us all something new.

The Contestants
Two of the contestants will participate live at RootsTech in the classroom audience. The other two will use our webinar technology to participate from their homes. Here they are:

The Competition
The one-hour competition will feature three rounds of topics. Each contestant will have three minutes to impress you with their demonstrations. Regardless of whether you will be in a seat at RootsTech or in a virtual seat from your home, you will see and hear it all - live! At the very end, YOU, the online audience will decide the winner by voting using the webinar's poll technology. Everyone will go home a winner, but the one with the most votes will go home with both the title of "RootsTech Genealogy Idol" and a free Flip-Pal Mobile scanner from Legacy Family Tree.

The sound of the human voice is a powerful tool which conveys a wide range of moods and emotions. The human voice can project loud enough to excite and cheer at a pep rally, soften its volume to comfort the grieving, or change to a friendly tone or pitch to say “hello” to a friend. Adding voice notes or messages to digital documents can communicate personality, mood, and emotions as well as add a multimedia touch to text-based documents. Although, sound recording software has been a standard accessory program on computers for numerous years, many people either do not know about it or just don’t use it. A solution to becoming a little more technically savvy in the production of word processing, spreadsheet, or presentation documents, emails, and Internet sites is by spicing them up with verbal messages and comments.

Genealogists and family historians type documents and messages daily using software such as Microsoft Word or email to disseminate information, ask questions, and to communicate with family, friends, other researchers, and research institutions. With all of this text-based communication, digital conversations can often be less personable and bland. The focus of this webinar is on adding audio or voice messages to spice up text-based communications in documents, emails, and Internet sites. This webinar will help participants discover free audio recording tools on their computers and guide them in understanding the added benefits of enhancing digital documents with audio and voice messages.

About the presenter

Known as “Professor Dru” in the online world, Drusilla Pair is a genealogist, technologist, and educator who has been tracing her family history for over 16 years in Virginia and North Carolina. She has conducted numerous genealogical presentations at family reunions, churches, and local and national genealogical societies. She has also written family history articles for genealogy and religious publications and books for several of her family reunions and has been interviewed by two local television stations about genealogy.

Having experience in a number of genealogical areas, she began speaking on a national level in 1998. Last year she spoke at the annual conference of the Afro American Historical & Genealogical Society (AAHGS) and at the Atlanta Family History Expos about using voice technology for family history projects. She was also selected as a Blogger of Honor for the Atlanta Family History Expos.
Ms. Pair has become a local genealogy expert in her community and has conducted numerous presentations focusing on African American Genealogy and Technology. She is also an active member of the Hampton Roads Afro American Historical and Genealogical Society and has created and maintains a blog for her society, www.aahgshr.blogspot.com.

Ms. Pair is also the author of several other blogs: “Find Your Folks,” and “Let Freedom Ring!”
