Webinars like the one Marian Pierre-Louis presented today give me renewed hope that I can find my ancestors! Marian presented Researching Your Connecticut Ancestors to a live webinar audience today. Its recording is now available in our webinar archives.

Anyone with Connecticut ancestry should watch this recording. Marian taught about the importance of geography, boundaries, and borders in the region. She also introduced us to many records that we often overlook, such as the 1798 Direct Tax lists, the 1917 military census, and all the state-wide indexes produced by the Connecticut State Library. Finally, she taught where the best records can be located - both online and in person.

About the presenter
Marian Pierre-Louis, a native of Connecticut, grew up in a picturesque colonial town surrounded by historic houses and an ancient burial ground. During her childhood she was nurtured into the ways of genealogy by a mother who had spent a better part of every Saturday during the 1960s at the Connecticut State Library. A poster calendar on the kitchen wall recorded five generations of ancestors’ birthdays for every day celebration. Now Marian is a House Historian and Genealogical Lecturer who specializes in southern New England (CT, RI, MA) research. She frequently speaks on New England topics including house history research, social media, African American research and a broad range of genealogical topics. She is the author of several blogs including The New England House Historian and Marian's Roots & Rambles.

Barbara’s Beaus and Gesche’s Girls-with Michael John Neill

This webinar on 18 September 2011 (3 PM CST) will look at two 19th century female German immigrants to the Midwest. Along the way we'll see how a variety of records were used to track these two females for whom name variants, name changes, and language challenges worked to make research even more difficult.

Not just about Germans, this lecture also touches on inheritance, female property ownership, and court and probate records.

We'll also track through Barbara's husbands--2, 3, or 4--depending upon how you count.

Exploring FamilyLink.com and WorldVitalRecords.com - free webinar now online

One of the genealogy industry giants - Paul Allen - just gave a terrific presentation on using WorldVitalRecords.com. WorldVitalRecords.com is a membership website with nearly 5 billion names in more than 50,000 databases. Its recording is now in our webinar archives.

I wanted to have Paul speak to us today because you hear a lot about different subscription sites and you never really know which ones are worth subscribing to. Paul gave an overview of everything you'd want to know about their site so you can decide it it will be of value to have in your personal genealogy toolbox. Their map collection alone is certainly worth adding to my list of resources. So if you've been on the fence about subscribing to WorldVitalRecords, take a look at Paul's presentation. Besides that, just listening to Paul's enthusiasm about genealogy makes it a good listen. Paul is the founder of Ancestry.com, FamilyLink.com, and WorldVitalRecords.com

  • Again, a wonderful webinar. I don't care how many times I go through the training videos, I still seem to learn at least one new thing every time I attend a webinar. Keep up the good work.
  • Another excellent presentation by Geoff. My comfort level in using Legacy soars after each webinar.
Fantastic as always. I think these "Watch Geoff" webinars are the best way to learn to use Legacy to its fullest.
  • Geoff Rasmussen is by far the best -he makes the process of entering data almost human.  Not anything to be fearful of. Thank you.
  • Geoff's comment about "this is not just about adding a census record" is bang on.
  • Geoff's webinars are the most helpful sources offered by Legacy.  He discusses so many Legacy resources - like the importance of timelines - that I never realized the value of before.
  • Getting the census details onto the chronology report was great! I had not known how to accomplish that. That was one of many new things I learned tonight.
  • I consider myself to be a proficient Legacy user, but learned several new tips! Thanks!
  • I had been struggling in finding a consistant  way of sourcing census records, and now I have an easy way of doing a census source. Thank you for your lesson and time.
  • I had no clue what that clipboard was all about until today. So glad I tuned in! Thanks. I will definitely watch for more of interest.
  • I have always picked up at least one "little gem" during these watch geoff live webinars that gets me excited and wanting to go to work right away. Today was no exception.
  • I learned so much tonight and I've been researching for 35+ years! I can't say enough of how appreciative I am of your free webinars and the content in them. Keep up the good work!
  • It was another very informative seminar.  I always get new tips.  One of the most reasurring is that you don't always have to follow the rules for data entry.  Just make sense of what you enter and be consistent.
  • Now that was something I needed to know. I learned WHY I should be doing this as well as how to do it. OK, so now I have a lot of work to do but at least I know why and how. I can see where by doing so will make things so much easier for me in the future or anyone else working with my data. Great stuff and a great job teaching it. Thank you so much.
  • The information on using the Source Clipboard will prove to be most helpful.  A true gem for any researcher.
  • This webinar taught me more in an hour and a half than I ever could have taught myself in a day!! I love these types of webinars. I am becoming more of a Legacy "expert" every time I attend.
  • Today's webinar was enjoyable from beginning to end.  Most enjoyable were the many added tips given as shortcuts and helps.
  • As much as I love these webinars, I think the "little tips" are my favorite part! I've learned about so many useful things that I didn't even know existed as part of Legacy Family Tree.

"Watch Geoff Live: Adding a Census Record" - a free webinar September 7, 2011

Join Legacy Family Tree's Geoff Rasmussen (that's me!) and take your genealogy and use of Legacy to the next level. In this special webinar edition, Geoff will go live and unscripted as he demonstrates how to properly analyze and record two different types of census records - a 1920 U.S. census record and a 1911 England census record - in his personal Legacy family file. And if it is anything like the previous three "Watch Geoff Live" episodes, you're sure to get a few additional tips and tricks along the way.

The live webinar is scheduled for Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at 9PM Eastern U.S., so register today to reserve your virtual seat. Registration is free but space is limited to the first 1,000 people to join that day.

Best Internet Resources for African American Genealogy - recording now available

If you do NOT have African American ancestry, you need to watch the recording of yesterday's webinar - that's how good it was. Angela Walton-Raji's enthusiasm and knowledge about the topic really brought it to life. One of our viewers (Judy) commented "after watching today, I sure wish I had African American genealogy to do - it was fantastic!" I completely agree.

The webinar was much more than a demonstration of the best websites. For someone who knows nothing about getting started, Angela also gave a quick review of the basic steps for African American genealogy.
