Reporting To Yourself: Keeping Track of What You’ve Already Done

The Friends of the National Archives Southeast Region are pleased to sponsor the presentation "Reporting to Yourself:  Keeping Track of What You’ve Already Done” with Jennifer P. Dondero, June 3rd, 2014.

Summary: Genealogy is more than just names, dates, and places.  Learn how to keep track of other information for continued research success. Research logs, note KEEPing and taking, as well as memos and reports will be discussed.

Presenter:  An avid genealogist for over twenty years, Jennifer has been a professional genealogist since 2005. She first began working as a full-time professional in the Genealogy Department of the Daughters of the American Revolution. In 2008 she decided to move on to new challenges and left the DAR to start her own company, J.P. Dondero Genealogy.
Jennifer’s professional specialties include lineage applications, southern research, and National Archives Records. She enjoys teaching and writing as well as researching and lecturing. Her personal research is based in north Georgia, especially Pickens and Gordon Counties. She loves the challenge of a brick wall problem as well as going beyond just dates and places to discover the social history of the locations and people she encounters.
When the pressure of breaking down brick walls formed from that famous Georgia red clay becomes too much, Jennifer enjoys Highland and Irish dancing. Before becoming a full-time genealogist, she earned a B.A. in Math/Economics with a minor in History from Agnes Scott College. She immediately followed this with a M.S. in Operations Research from Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech).

This presentation will be broadcast live on June 3rd, 2014 [1st Tuesday]:

Register for Webinar Wednesday - I Had My DNA Tested - Now What? by Ugo Perego

Hundreds of thousands of genetic profiles for family history and ancestral purposes have been generated by private laboratories, universities, and the National Geographic’s Genographic Project during the past fifteen years. However, many individuals that had their DNA tested were somewhat disappointed, as the information provided by many laboratories is often difficult to understand. What do all these numbers and letters mean? What can they tell about my past? As Ann Tuner and Megan Smolenyak stated in their book, Trace Your Roots with DNA, “test results for just one person are like the sound of one hand clapping.” The great paradox in genetic genealogy is the fact that in order to understand your own DNA, you need to know something about the DNA of everyone else! Thankfully, a number of online databases are providing large quantities of searchable data in an effort to provide the missing hand. Knowing which resources are available and how to properly use them is key to understanding our personalize genetic genealogy and getting the most out of our own genetic profile.
