Register for Webinar Wednesday - Genealogy 101: Getting Started on the Right Foot by Peggy Lauritzen

We all have an aunt or a grandmother that has a shoebox full of obituaries, funeral cards, or other old documents that sit on a dresser or closet shelf. Or, perhaps we are that person with the shoebox. These beginning genealogy sessions will show how to take what you know and what you have access to, and teach the steps involved in getting it organized and compiled into a useful genealogy that can benefit future generations.

Session 1 - Getting Started on the Right Foot. All of us know at least a bit of information about our family. It may be something we have heard, or something we have and don't know how it can help us. We will start out learning about information from an obituary, and entering the facts into the Legacy Family Tree software.
Join us for the live webinar Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at 2pm Eastern U.S. Register today to reserve your virtual seat. Registration is free but space is limited to the first 1,000 people to join that day. Before joining, please visit www.java.com to ensure you have the latest version of Java which our webinar software requires. When you join, if you receive a message that the webinar is full, you know we've reached the 1,000 limit, so we invite you to view the recording which should be published to the webinar archives within an hour or two of the event's conclusion.

About the presenter
Lauritzenp-100Peggy Clemens Lauritzen, AG, was involved in genealogy before she was even born. The daughter of avid genealogists, she was spending time in courthouses and cemeteries while other children were playing on swings and going to the beach. The love of her family’s history has never left her. With her experience as a former Family History Director, she is a frequent speaker at genealogical societies, workshops, seminars, and webinars where she loves bringing genealogy to life. Some of those would include The Ohio Genealogical Society, The Ohio State University, Brigham Young University, and many other state and local genealogy societies. She has recently completed several Legacy QuickGuides on Appalachia, which are also available on www.legacyfamilytree.com and www.amazon.com.

Where Does It Say That? Learning to Love Indirect Evidence - free webinar by Chris Staats now online for limited time

The recording of today's webinar, "Where Does It Say That? Learning to Love Indirect Evidence" by Chris Staats is now available in the Webinar Library for free for a limited time. Check out these comments:
  • Best seminar I have seen. I gained much from watching a professional genealogist work through a series of non-trivial
    problems.
  • This pulled together so much of the info gleaned from various seminars on
sources and analysis. It really got my mind working. I thought it would be sort of an overview to strengthen my research skills, but it went way beyond that. I will be going back to my research with an enriched sense of how to approach it.
  • This is hands down the best presentation I have heard from Legacy.

WACKY Wednesday: Heritage Quest Online

DATE: 25 March 2015
By popular demand, we're exploring the new HeritageQuest Online website, accessible via public libraries, including some that provide home access through public library website portals. This is especially important since Ancestry.com now manages the HeritageQuest Online servers.

You will be surprised how in a very short time, Ancestry.com has added helpful context sensitive advertizing in the form of info pages that lack the HQ/Ancestry co-branding, in favor of Ancestry.com branding.

I'm not faulting Ancestry.com, except for the fact that the sometimes much better HQ US federal census images are now replaced by Ancestry census images. Also, sadly, the HQ census search engine is gone. I am one who believes the HQ census indexes had a higher accuracy rate than Ancestry's. (sigh)

Come on over to see which of DearMYRTLE's very distant cousins will visit to explore one topic in depth.

Register for Webinar Wednesday - Where Does It Say That? Learning to Love Indirect Evidence by Chris Staats

Direct evidence, the sort of evidence that completely answers a research question by itself, is often scarce. Without any documents telling us exactly what we want to know, how do we identify relationships that might not be stated explicitly, resolve conflicts between records, and arrive at sound genealogical conclusions? By collecting, analyzing, and correlating indirect evidence of course! The Henry McGinnis family of 19th century rural Pennsylvania provides a good example of using mostly indirect evidence to reconstruct a family which left precious little for descendants to work with.

The recording of today's webinar, "Irish Genealogical Records in the 17th-19th Centuries" by Judy Wight is now available in the Webinar Library for free for a limited time. In her 8th webinar in our Irish Genealogy series, Judy taught about many new records for the first time. If your Irish brick wall hasn't fallen yet, this may be the webinar that gets you closer! Lots of great comments:
  • This webinar has given me the courage to start looking for my ancestors in Ireland.
  • Chock full of source info that was new. Plus, as an old time user of Legacy enjoyed Geoff's after party - especially how to use the name index.
  • Another superb high-quality webinar from Legacy, beautifully hosted by Geoff, and presented so knowledgeably by Judith Wight. Thank you once more. I'm thrilled to be a member of Legacy Webinars!

Irish GenealogyLegacy QuickGuide: Irish Genealogy - 2.95
The Irish diaspora (legally defined as people of Irish nationality who habitually reside outside of the island of Ireland) is far reaching. It has been estimated that over 100,000,000 people worldwide claim that they have ancestors from Ireland. The Irish Potato Famine of the mid to late 1840s is just one of many watershed events that precipitated emigration.
Looking to find those elusive Irish ancestors? The Irish Genealogy Legacy QuickGuide contains useful information including a timeline of Irish history events, tips on Irish genealogy research strategy, outline of major immigrant groups, and more. Also included are links to websites and resources covering vital records, church records, census records, as well as general Irish genealogy resources. This handy 5-page PDF guide can be used on your computer or mobile device for anytime access.

Are You Ready to be a Professional Genealogist?

Celebrate St. Patrick's Day With Us!
Free Webinar from APG

Presenter: Paula Stuart-Warren, CG

Date: Tuesday, March 17, 2015

Time: 9:00 p.m. EASTERN Daylight Time

Cost: Free!

Webinar Description:  Many people who have worked on their own family history research consider this profession. However, we need the necessary areas of skill, experience, and understanding before presenting ourselves as a professional in this field. I like to offer realistic encouragement to those considering working part-time or full-time in this occupation. During this webinar we will cover some readiness questions, learn about ways to improve our skills and knowledge, and learn to honestly judge our readiness. How do you think you will do in the readiness questions? While directed mainly at those interested in doing research for clients, most of these principles also apply to those who are writers, editors, lecturers, heir searchers, or genealogical reference librarians.

About the Presenter: Paula Stuart-Warren is an internationally recognized genealogical educator, researcher and consultant focusing on unusual resources, manuscripts, methodology, and analyzing records. She has researched onsite at the U. S. National Archives, Family History Library, Minnesota Historical Society, Wisconsin Historical Society, New England Historic Genealogical Society and other state and local repositories from coast to coast. She is a Course Coordinator for the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy and the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh, and has lectured at National Genealogical Society and Federation of Genealogical Societies conferences since the early 1990s, and in many states and Canada.

Paula is a former officer of the Association of Professional Genealogists, former board member of the Minnesota Genealogical Society, and past President of the Northland Chapter of the APG. She is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Federation of Genealogical Societies.
